Political System. Ukraine is a sovereign state. Its capital is Kyiv. The higher body of state power is the Verkhovna Rada. The Ukrainian government is headed by the Prime-Minister.
The Head of State is the President that is elected every five years.
The Geographical Info. Ukraine is situated in the eastern part of Europe. Its area is more than 603 thousand square kilometers.
The nature of Ukraine is especially beautiful due to a number of rives and lakes. The main rive is Dnieper. Ukraine is washed by Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.
The mountains cover only 5% of ukrainian territory. There are the Crimean Mountains in the south and the Carpathians in the west.
The biggest cities in Ukraine are Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dniepropetrovsk, Lviv.
Ukraine is a developed industrial country. It is now through a difficult period of changing its economical system.
The Climate. The climate of Ukraine is temperate continental. The climate of the Western regions is mild, while the climate of the Eastern ones is sharp.
The average temperature in January is 7 degrees below zero. Tha average temperature in July is 17 degrees above zero.
The highest rainfall is observed in the western part of Ukraine, in the Carpatians. Tha wind are strong and occur often in the central part, in the steppe zone.
The climate of the Crimea is subtropical.The winter temperature is about 4 degrees above zero and the average temperature in summer is about 22 degrees above zero.
The Places of Historical Interest. Ukraine has an ancient history. The State of Kyiv Rus was set up in the 9th century. It was a powerful feudal state widely known throughout Europe.
One of the oldest towns in our country is Chernigiv. Old Slavs inhabited this area in the 8-9th centuries. In Chernigiv there are 5 out of 25 architectural landmarks of the 11-12th centuries preserved on the territory of Ukraine.
One of them is the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral. In the Cathedral interior there remained originals of frescoes of the 11th century.
One more interesting place is Vinnitsa. Numerous monuments and memorial sites of the town give account of life and activity of prominent men of national culture.
Another place which attracts a lot of visitors is Uman. This town is famous for its park-reserve "Sofievka" that was set up in the period of 1796-1801.
